About the DPDPA
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is India's comprehensive legal framework for the processing of digital personal data. Enacted on August 11, 2023, it balances the right of individuals to protect their personal data with the need to process it for lawful purposes.
The Act defines key entities — Data Principals (individuals whose data is processed), Data Fiduciaries (organisations that determine purpose and means of processing), and Consent Managers (registered intermediaries managing consent on behalf of Data Principals).
The Data Protection Board of India is established as the regulatory body, empowered to investigate complaints, conduct inquiries, and impose penalties up to ₹250 crore.
